This infrared thermometer is designed for safely and quickly measuring the surface temperature of various hot, hazardous, or hard-to-reach objects without direct contact. The device consists of optics, a temperature sensor, a signal amplifier, a processing circuit, and an LCD display.

The optics collect the infrared energy emitted by the object and focus it onto the sensor, which then translates the energy into an electrical signal. This signal is then amplified and processed, with the resulting digital reading displayed on the LCD.

The device features a 12:1 distance-to-spot-size ratio, meaning that as the distance (D) from the target surface increases, the spot size (S) of the area measured also becomes larger. It is important to ensure that the target is larger than the unit's spot size, as the smaller the target, the closer the measurement distance needs to be. For critical accuracy, the target should be at least twice the size of the spot size.

The unit is preset with an emissivity of 0.95, which is suitable for most organic materials and painted or oxidized surfaces. However, inaccurate readings may occur when measuring shiny or polished metal surfaces. To compensate, the target surface can be covered with masking tape or flat black paint, and the measurement can be taken once the tape or paint has reached the same temperature as the material underneath.

The device features several user-friendly functions, including a laser for aiming, a Celsius/Fahrenheit switch, a backlight for use in low-light conditions, and a data hold function that displays the reading with a HOLD icon when the trigger is released. The unit also has an automatic power-off function that activates after approximately 8 seconds of inactivity.

To ensure safe and proper use, users should carefully inspect the plastic housing for any damage before use, and avoid pointing the laser directly at the eyes or at reflective surfaces. The unit should also be kept away from environments with explosive gases, steam, or excessive dust, as well as strong electromagnetic fields and sudden changes in ambient temperature.

The temperature measurement range of this infrared thermometer is -50°C to 500°C (-58°F to 932°F), with an accuracy of ±1.5°C (±2.7°F) or ±1.5% of the reading, whichever is greater, for the 0°C to 500°C (32°F to 932°F) range. For the -50°C to 0°C (-58°F to 32°F) range, the accuracy is ±3°C (±5°F).

The device is powered by two AAA batteries, which provide a typical battery life of 12 hours with the laser turned off. The operating temperature range is 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F), with an operating humidity of 10% to 90% RH (non-condensing) up to 30°C (86°F). The storage temperature range is -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F).
